
Sigourney Weaver was recently asked by MTV about the potential for another Alien movie featuring Weaver’s Ripley character. Apparently there was a rumor that Ridley Scott, the director of Alien, had an idea for what would be the fifth movie in the series. Even though Weaver said she’d be into it, the Alien vs. Predator movies put an end to that idea.
“The last time [Ridley and I] saw each other we talked about it. The character is still interesting [and] I’d love to work with Ridley again,” Weaver said, raising our hopes to their absolute apex before immediately dashing them against the rocks of reality. “But Fox has effectively killed it because of ‘Alien vs. Predator.’ What else can you do with the creature? You can take the situation, you can go back to where they came from.
“To play someone who ages a couple hundred years was fascinating,” she added. “[But] let [Ripley] rest.”
I’m a big fan of the Alien films and the idea of Weaver and Ridley Scott working on a new one sounds fantastic. But unfortunately the watered-down, B-grade, monster movies known as Alien vs. Predator stole it’s thunder and has pretty much doomed the Alien franchise.
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem came out on DVD today. This is the sequel to the AVP movie from 2004 and it features a new cast, new director, and what the studio had hoped would be a winning new direction for an AVP franchise. The box office was not so hot for this movie and it will most likely do much better business on DVD as more people are willing to give a DVD a shot for some cheap thrills.
