The Ugly Truth

Rating: ★★½☆

First off I would like to say when I heard that this film was rated “R” I became quite excited to see it. Gerard Butler, who in my opinion is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood right now, is more or less the reason the film was rated “R”. Butler plays Mike Chadway who in the script is called a ” male chauvinist”.  In the beginning of the film Chadway has his own public television show called, you guessed it “The Ugly Truth” where he shares his theories on relationships and each genders likes and dislikes. Katherine Heigl plays the relationship/love challenged Abby Richter. A producer for a local morning show who stumbles across Chadway’s show one evening and calls in live and disowns Chadway’s theories and beliefs while Chadway accuses her over the phone of being a lesbian, a dog, and finally ugly. Abby is horrified the next day at work when she realizes Chadway is now to have his own segment on her show every day. The film revolves mostly around Chadway’s segments on the show and Abby and his relationship as he helps her solve her dating problems and get Mr. Dreamy while he, you guessed it falls for her.

The film itself was made quite well with a plot not seen often in a romantic comedy and one that has radically vulgar humor but not as bad as say Borat or Bruno. Yes many are thinking that it is a chick flick but it is still a film that many guys could enjoy and should not be overlly embarassed.

Yet the most shocking thing I found out about the movie is, generally in film there will be small-time characters where the actor/actress takes away from the movie with their poor acting but in this particular film I saw many new faces who had quite large parts and did superbly. My educated guess for an explanation of this phenomenon is either not well-known talent or we have the director to thank, Robert Luketic. This film was Luketic’s 7th film he directed. After seeing this film and you are interested in past work of Luketic I would suggest his past popular films,  Legally Blonde and 21. All in all this may be my favorite chick-flick to date because of its new witty and vulgar humor and great acting from Heigl, Butler and supporting cast. So in the end the ugly truth is that many guys will enjoy this film hopefully.

Thanks for reading.
